William's first month

My little William's firt month has been a dream and I am not liking how fast the time is going. He has spent alot of the time in my arms cuddling with me, or being awed at from his other siblings. Evan has definitely taken a strong liking to him. He is very gentle with him and loves to kiss his hands and feet. I have loved watching my two little boys already develop a strong bond. William is so peaceful all the time and hardly ever cries. I am so in love with this little boy, and can't believe he is mine forever. Happy 1st month little William!

Olivia my little helper

Since I am a little strapped these days with William, I think my kids are learning to fend for themselves. So the other day Olivia came up to me and said, "Guess what Mom, Evan knows how to wipe my bum!" Hmmm not sure I want to fend for themselves that much;-)

Evan wanting to nurse

While nursing my little William I have this little guy whispering in my ear, "I want some!" I guess it wasn't too long ago since he was nursing, but I am sorry my little Evan you are just a little too old;-)

Owen's Real appearance

Owen and his team had the opportunity to walk out with the LA Galaxy team at the Real game last night! He was so excited, and what a neat experience that I am sure he will never forget.

Olivia and Soccer

I love this picture my friend Lindsay took of yesterdays game! All the girls were in at one time, and we yelled out "Girl Power" and this was the result of it! I have loved watching Olivia play soccer. This year was her first and she loves it! She gets so excited to show off for Owen, and when she gets a goal she looks over at him to make sure he was watching. Olivia sure has caught on to the sport and I have a feeling there will be a lot more games to watch her play!

My little William 6 days old

William's first photo shoot was a success! He definitely looks like a little heavenly being, and Chris and I are head over heels in love with him! I was so lucky to get the first week of his life to just be alone with him. Both Chris's parents and my parents were so great to help with the other 3 kids while I just held him and took time to rest and recover. I have felt so blessed to have William come into our lives, and am so proud to be his Mom. Love you my sweet William!

William's Birth Story

On the morning of Wednesday March 27th I went into my last Drs. Appointment. Everything looked good and you were ready to meet me! I had her strip my membranes which can start labor if you and I were ready. I went home and just took it easy. At 11:00 a.m. my contractions started getting more consistent and were about 15 minutes apart. I was getting so excited. I was doing my meditations and just kept praying to Heavenly Father that everything would go okay and that I would have the strength to bring you into this world. I took Olivia to school and laid Evan down and then continued to listen to my Hypnobaby CD’s. Those were so helpful and comforting to me especially knowing that you were going to be here soon. My contractions started getting a little more strong and closer together about 10-12 minutes. Around 4:00 p.m. Olivia, Evan, and I headed to the neighborhood Easter egg hunt and while I was walking to the clubhouse my contractions were getting closer together, probably every 6-7 minutes and a little more intense. My friends Desiree and Lindsay talked me into just going into the hospital (which I am grateful I listened or I might have had this baby at home!) My Mom came and picked me up and we waited for Chris to get home and we headed to the hospital. I was so calm during my contractions and would just breathe and go into my peaceful zone, and then when they would let up I was excited and couldn’t believe that this day was here! We arrived at the hospital around 5 and they immediately put me into a room. They checked me and I was dilated to a 5, and 90% effaced. My doula, Laura, quickly arrived after that, and I was so happy to see her! I progressed so quickly, and thought I would have a little more time before the intense part, but you were just so excited to meet your daddy and I! I started to feel my body heat up and the contractions were coming a little closer and harder. All I wanted to do was to get in the tub. But lucky for us we had a very impatient nurse, and she was so determined to do everything medically unnecessary. At one point she was upset with me for not sharing with her my platelet problem. I can recall telling her “Um do you realize I am in full active labor?” The nurses began talking about how I was bleeding too much and were worried that the placenta was tearing away, and the word c-section came up. Laura turned to me immediately and said do not worry about that one bit, you are doing it! Your placenta is going to be coming out anyways. So I just went right back into my birthing mind! Thank heavens there was a shift change and my new nurse was wonderful in comparison to her. Laura, my doula, then suggested to the nurse that I get in the tub. Once I was situated I felt like the contractions were manageable. My body was in transition! This was the part that I was most skeptical about, but really I was mentally ready. I did my hum breathing and felt so much relief. About 20 minutes later they wanted me to get out of the tub. (In hospitals they do not think it is very safe for the baby to be delivered in a tub for sanitary reasons). I wish so bad that I was able to just stay in there and do my pushing in the tub. It took everything out of me to get out and onto the bed. This part is where a couple of times my faith was a little shaken. It was hard. My body was doing all the work, but I could not relax or give into it. After fighting a couple of the contractions, I finally just surrendered. I know at one point I bit my mom’s arm. I did not know how to deal with the pain so I guess I just needed to inflict it on someone else. After about 5-6 hard pushes little William arrived at 7:04 pm. The weirdest part is once he came everything was calm, my body did not feel any more pain, and even when I was being stitched I was completely at ease. Everything that I wanted happened; the cord wasn’t clamped until it was done pulsating, the vernix was not immediately rubbed off, no eye ointment, and you were directly placed on my chest, I was in Heaven! You were perfect! The doctor informed me that you were posterior which made the delivery a little more difficult and caused some tearing on me and bruising on your sweet little face. But I didn’t have anything to compare it to, so the pushing may have been a little easier if your position was right, but everything worked out, and Dad and I were in baby bliss!

From Laura, my doula's perspective

When I arrived at the hospital and went into Julie and Chris’s room, I was so happy to see she had found a fabulous dress to labor in. She looked chic, and beautiful, and, well, like HERSELF rather than like a hospital patient or someone who was sick with something. She was radiant and glowing, and I loved finding that she was already receiving a lot of great support from her mom and husband. As I observed her first contraction, I saw that she was handling them very well, and I could tell that she was already at the point where they would be picking up substantially from here on out. But they moved even faster than I expected them to. She was handling these larger contractions with such ease that the nurse didn’t realize how far along she was in the process. Or, at least, it didn’t seem like the nurse was aware. The nurse kept asking Julie “admittance”questions in the middle of her contractions. I was so happy to see that Julie just ignored her questions and focused on her breathing while Chris and Ricki answered the questions on her behalf. Julie’s breathing got stronger and heavier as labor progressed and I could tell that things were picking up FAST. Julie wasn’t comfortable in the bed and asked a few different times to be moved to the tub. The nurse insisted that she get at least a 20 minute reading on baby’s heart-rate first, so we did our best to keep Julie comfortable in the bed. Ricki was diligent in keeping the monitor on baby so that the reading would not be interrupted again and we would be able to get Julie into the tub sooner rather than later. She breathed through quite a few really big contractions there on the bed, and the nurse finally clued in and realized that Julie was much farther along in the laboring process than she thought. I asked Julie if she would like to be checked and she agreed. The nurse did the check and reported that Julie was at a 7 and that there was a lot of bleeding. More than what was normal. She sent the other nurse out to pull up Julie’s file to see if they had reported a low-lying placenta on the 20 week ultrasound. It felt like a very long wait while she was gone! Julie asked if that meant that she would have to have a C-section and I said something along the lines of: “They don’t know what’s going on yet. All they know is that there is some bleeding and they’re going to find out what that means.” In my head, I seriously doubted that they would have “overlooked”a low-lying placenta. Julie would have had an additional ultrasound late in her pregnancy if her placenta had been extremely low. They would have checked back to see where it had ended up and to see if it was covering the opening of the cervix. I said a prayer that nothing would stand in the way of her having the birth that she had planned so carefully for. I just kept thinking: “There is no way, after all the work she has done, that this can’t work out beautifully.” The dilation check had sent Julie into another huge series of transition contractions and she was in a VERY undesirable position {flat on her back} when they came on. Ricki and I were by her head and we both just gave her all the support we could, and then, when the contraction ended, we worked to get her into a more optimal position before the next one started. Julie was a major trooper while they finished getting the heart-rate readings, and once she got the green light, Chris and I practically had to chase her to the bathroom! She whipped her dress off and was in the tub in a matter of seconds. She took a second to decide how she wanted to sit. I could tell that she was a little scared to lay back and settle in because of how bad the contractions felt when she was on her back in bed. I told her that the water would make things feel a lot better and that it might be okay to lay back in the tub so she could relax fully. She did, and seemed to relax immediately. She had been in the water less than a minute when I noticed that there was meconium in the water. The nurse came in and I pointed it out to her. I told Julie that it was there, and then told her that we see this all the time, and that it was normal and okay. She vocalized really well and expressed surprise at how well it helped her cope. She was deeply settled into her birthing mind at this point. She seemed very lucid and aware, yet very “far-away” and deep inside her own mind at the same time. The tub helped her a lot and she really relaxed and focused on her work. She only had 4 or 5 contractions in the bathtub before she started feeling “pushy.” We had her stay in there as long as we could get away with. The nursing staff started pushing to have her get back in the bed, but with how much the water was helping her, Chris and I wanted to let her be in there as long as possible. Finally the nurse came in and said we needed to get her into the bed and get baby here. Julie was on board with that. She waited until she was sure she had a minute before the next contraction, and then hopped out of the tub and got back into the bed. She was FAST. I have never seen a mom move so fast, so late in labor! She was NOT going to get caught in a contraction standing in the middle of the floor. She got back into the bed and continued to labor there. The doctor checked for dilation and reported that she was complete. She really started to dig-in and push with each contraction. I could tell that she was feeling “out-of-control” internally, but externally she maintained strength and composure. She asked “How much longer?” at one point, and I, of course, had no direct answer for that, so I said something along the lines of “Not much!” She pushed through 5 contractions and as baby descended, she did an amazing job of coping with any burning or pelvic pressure that she felt. Julie was extremely focused. I worked with her on relaxing her facial muscles and unclenching her jaw in-between pushing contractions. She did an amazing job following my prompts and would immediately relax any area that I brought her attention to. With one big push, baby’s entire head was born and the rest of his little body immediately followed. Julie snapped immediately back into her “normal” self and was absolutely overjoyed to be holding her sweet little boy! She immediately began talking to him and loving on him and he was very alert and very quiet and calm. It was amazing!!! Julie did a great job being “Mama Bear” and made sure that all of her wishes for baby were respected. I loved watching this beautiful little family basking in the joy of that moment! Chris and Ricki were wonderful supports for Julie. Chris was calm and confident throughout and seemed to know intuitively how to be there for Julie at every turn. He was never panicky, or openly doubtful of her. He just gave her an unlimited supply of support and love. He did a great job of doing the knee press on Julie to help her cope with contractions in the bed. Ricki was awesome too! I love seeing mothers in the delivery room. There is just nothing like having your mama there! This mother and daughter were obviously very close and the spirit in the room was powerful and loving. It was a blessed and very sacred experience and I am so grateful that I was invited to be a part of it!

William's birth story written by my Mom

My dearest William, Oh how grateful we are that you are here! And that you have come to our family. You belong to us forever now and we love you so much already. I want you to know how proud I am of your Mom. While your Mom carried you she found out there might be some concern of whether she might have to deliver you without pain medication. So instead of being afraid and waiting to know for sure, she got to work and studied and prepared herself with meditation and coaching from a wonderful woman named, Laura. She wrote a birth plan for you and everything. I was very impressed with her and your Dad on how they faced this. I have always felt so blessed to live in a time of modern medicine so I never had to face their dilemma. You arrived on a Wednesday Spring day, March 27th, just after 7 in the evening. (This day you share birthdays with your Uncle Lance, which is special.) Your mom was ready and so strong! She had your dad, Laura, and I for support. But she had to bear all the pain. Everything was pretty much going as your birth planned was written, until you decided to deliver posterior. I’m sure it wasn’t comfortable for you, but your mom was really feeling it too. Now I was feeling pain, a different kind of pain. A mother watching her daughter be in pain. During this whole time I was so grateful I could be there witnessing your birth. I can honestly say there were times it was wonderful, spiritual, and sometimes funny how your mom would be talking to us and suddenly go into meditation because of a contraction. Once the contraction would stop your mom would just continue on with the conversation as if nothing happened. Your Dad would say, “aannndd she’s back!” It was funny, no it was really funny! And then it was really hard especially at the end to see her in so much pain. Posterior was not part of the birth plan. I was so worried she would have to keep up with everything and she was getting so tired and I didn’t know then what would or could they do to help her. Thank heavens she didn’t have to push for very long. Just over two hours after arriving in the hospital you were born! I’m so grateful she was prepared. I’m so grateful she did it the way she wanted too. I’m so grateful I was there. I’m sooo grateful I may not have to do this again! But I’m most grateful for you William. And that you are the perfect and healthy and Grandpa and I will love you always and forever! Love, Grandma Ricki
